Risca is about eight minutes from us down the Sirhowy valley road, which makes it one of our regular runs. We cover Pontymister, Ty-Sign, Crosskeys and Cwmcarn as part of the same trip.
Plenty of what we do here is garden clearance – the gardens back onto steep ground and clearing a season of growth generates far more than a subscription green bin will ever take.

The council collection
Caerphilly County Borough Council runs a bulky waste collection at £28 for up to three items, rising to £43 for six, which is the most they will take in one collection. If you can wait for a slot and you can get the items out to the kerb yourself, it is cheaper than we are and you should use it. Where it falls down is that it is kerbside only, there is a limit on items, and the refusal list is long - no building materials, no garden waste, no tyres, no paint, no car parts.

Getting to you
Risca and Pontymister are an easy run down the valley for us. Ty-Sign sits high up with some steep, narrow estate roads, and the terraces in Crosskeys and Danygraig are the usual valleys pattern - narrow fronts, back lanes that are passable but not generous. None of it is a problem, but it is worth telling us which side is easiest when you book.
